Changes in properties of waterborne alkyd coating with incorporation of colloidal nano silica

Alkyds have for a long time been one of the first choices as binders in outdoor wood coatings. Addition of hard and stiff nano particles would typically reinforce the coating. However, we report that addition of colloidal nano silica reduces the stiffness of alkyd binder due to influence on auto-oxidation curing. Influence on the curing has the potential to extend the time before alkyds become too brittle and crack. This is explored through prolonged curing at increased temperature.
