VARIATIONS OF FRACTIONAL COMPOSITION vs.CHANGES IN MOISTURE CONTENT DURING STORAGE OF WOOD CHIPS

This article describes variations of fractional composition and moisture content of wood chips from forest residues – tops and branches – and 1.2 m long firewood. After chipping with the same machine the largest share of particles in both cases were with a size from 10 to 20 mm. Monitoring of moisture content in the wood chips during storage outdoors and indoors in the wet period of autumn and winter elucidated the changes depending on the fraction sizes. Variations in the ambient air temperature and humidity together with particle size reliably explain changes in actual moisture content of wood chips. Model has been drawn up to specify each factor´s influence on moisture content of wood chips ranking that wood chips’ actual humidity is mostly being affected by relative humidity, lesser by air temperature and then size of wood chips particles.
