Wood is an important construction material to help reduce the environmental impact of the building sector [1]. However, its susceptibility to fire is often perceived as a drawback to its use in construction, yet wood can be modified to tailor its properties to specific applications, increasing, among others, its fire resistance. Wood modification for improving fire resistance is mainly modification with the use of chemical reagents containing halogen, phosphorus, nitrogen, borate, and sodium borate [2]. Wood mineralization, on the other hand, is a more environmentally friendly process to improve fire resistance. We show here our work on the mineralization of wood with calcium carbonate, studying the growth and particle distribution, and its impact on fire resistance.
