The gravimetric method that is used today to determine the moisture content in wood is very tedious. The results are received after 24 hours, and it can be quite hard to use the achieved information in industrial processes. We have tested a new method based on X-ray to determine the moisture content in wood. It is a fast method ≈ 1 min/measurement, and in difference to many other techniques. Results achieved with this method on wood chips (Scots pine, Norway spruce and birch) have shown good agreement with the gravimetric method that has been used as a reference method. Standard deviation has been low, around 0.4-0.9 percentage points for repeatable measurements on the same sample.
