SAWMILL MODEL AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION

The research of sawn wood is developing far more rapidly than following it technique and technology. The newest achievements in technique, technologies and industrial computerization are forcing once again to check, assess and change the relatively immovable indices of this industrial branch. For Lithuanian sawmilling it is not only important and urgent to follow and implement recent achievements in this field, but also make efforts so that science, technologies and professional skills should bring a new and considerable contribution to the Lithuanian sawmilling industry.
In Lithuanian sawmills the volume yield of sawn timber is still calculated and planned on the basis of the standards worked out according to generalized mean form and dimension indices of sawlogs. Accuracy of aligning and positioning of log and cant during sawing in relation to blades in the sawing machine depends on equipment was used, shape and dimensions of the log or cant and human factor (if it is manual).
Various shape and dimensional factors of log and technological factors of sawing process have significant impact on sawn timber volume yield. This paper presents the results of research using sawmill model. The following investigation tasks (targets) were raised: to define the influence of various log form and measurement parameters (top end diameter, length, taper and sweep) on sawn timber volume yield; to determine the influence of the variables of log sawing technological processes – saw kerf width, log positioning errors (offset); to derive models, which describe the influence of all factors on sawn timber volume yield; to compare the results obtained with real industrial indices and calculations.
