Plasma pre-treatment of thermally modified woodfor increased printed coating performance under extreme conditions

Heat-treated wood is typically used in building exteriors and in saunas (high temperature and moisture content). A recent master thesis showed that the adhesion strength of a printed coating can be negatively impacted in sauna environment [Leesment 2021]. The potential of plasma pre-treatment is to enable and enhance the use of conventional water-based coatings which can have poor adhesive performance on heat-treated wood to be used in extreme conditions. However, no works have been conducted on the subject. The aim of this work is to employ cold surface barrier discharge plasma treatment prior to printing on the surface of thermally treated wood. The SFE of the surfaces was assessed from contact angle measurements and the coating adhesion strength was assessed from cross-cut tests.
