Planer knives’ quality setting with microcad lite optical system

There has been an urgent need to investigate quality of milling knives leading to a higher performance of the knives on the surface of wooden work piece and lower consumption of energy.
The objective of the research is to determine current situation regarding preparation of woodworking tools in the Lithuanian wood processing and furniture manufacturing industry, and to develop some guidelines for more effective usage of the tools.
There are two forms of tool preparation in Lithuania – preparation that is done in specialised companies and when furniture manufacturing or wood processing companies carry out appropriate preparation on their own. A problem has existed for a long time due to the absence of a fast and simple preparation and lack of control method to determine quality of tool preparation. The exploitation of available methods and instruments is fairly complicated under conditions of available production.
To find out more about the current situation, researchers from Kaunas University of Applied Sciences carried out a research and visited some woodworking companies. After inspecting sharpening workshops of woodworking tools the conclusion can be drawn that inadequate attention is paid to the preparation of the wood treatment tools, especially in selection of an appropriate sharpening mode and proper usage of adequate sharpening tools.
Another important factor is that the companies do not have appropriate equipment to evaluate the quality level of tool preparation.
An optical measuring device MicroCAD Lite by GFMesstechnik GmbH   (Germany) was applied in the research for more accurate analysis.
The research comprised of two following stages:
The first stage included alignment of optical measuring device MicroCAD Lite and planning knives measurement usage and surface finishing quality setting;
The second stage included a thorough analysis of the collected data and application of recommendations on tool preparation. As the research showed, the companies pay inadequate attention to the sharpening of woodworking tools and quality evaluation, ignoring the fact that preparation of the tool directly affects quality parameters of the wood ware. Thus, there has been a crucial importance to search for opportunities to make recommendations on preparation of the tools and quality setting.
