Microstructure and properties of activated carbon fibers deriving from liquefied wood

Activated carbon fibers (ACF) were prepared from liquefied wood through steam and KOH activation. The results showed that the specific surface area and pore volume of steam- activated ACF (ACF-S) were directly related to the activation temperature. The ACF activated by KOH (ACF-KOH) have more small micropores (<0.7 nm) in addition to more mesopores in the range of 2-4 nm, compared with ACF-S. The ACF-KOH had more oxygenated functional groups on their surfaces than the ACF-S. ACF showed good charge propagation and higher adsorption properties.
