Wood properties depends on different biotic and abiotic factors what are mainly effecting wood physical and mechanical properties. The same time the wood quality is changing. However, essential lost in wood quality are obtained due to wood rot decay destroying mainly the industrial roundwood.
Norway spruce as one of the most important European tree species is widely used in building industry. However, low wood rot resistance decreasing the lower durability of spruce wood that is limiting the spruce wood outdoor usage. In Lithuania the wood rot distribution essential studies done, nevertheless, there were no researches on rot-decayed wood physical and mechanical properties performed.
The aim of current study was to evaluate the rot decay influence on Norway spruce wood properties and on wood properties closely allocated the rot decayed area. The evaluated spruce rot decayed wood properties have indicated that wood density in rot-decayed area and strength properties decreased. If to compare with nearly pith allocated and not decayed wood at the same spruce stands.
Thus, it was estimated that not –decayed wood closely allocated the rot decayed area have had good wood properties, i.e. the influence rot decay on wood properties was indicated.
Keywords: Norway spruce, rot decay, wood density, mechanical strength properties
