The production of transport packaging is the most important part of the paper industry in Europe. The share of the total amount of paper produced for corrugated cardboard transport packaging sector is 41.8% (CEPI 2023). Corrugated packaging is a key element in the supply chain in the global economy. For the production of corrugated board, mainly recycled fibers are used (Utilization rate 93.4%) (CEPI 2023). Due to the goals of reducing the use of plastics in the economy set by the European Commission, recycled paper as an ecological alternative becomes a key element to achieve them. The current challenges for the paper industry are the search for ecological and sustainable methods of modifying paper products, necessary for adaptation to new applications.
The aim of the research was to make transport packaging resistant to the adverse effects of external weather conditions in the supply chain, such as high air humidity, water vapor condensation, or direct contact with liquid water. The strength parameters of corrugated board are very sensitive to an increase of water content, which is its biggest disadvantage. Research conducted by (Nowak et al., 2022) proved that coating paper with a starch modified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) significantly increases its hydrophobic properties.
