How moisture affects the structural integrity of wood under dynamic loads

Wood density and wood moisture content (MC) are key impact variables on almost each other wood property (Niemz et al. 2023). In particular, the elasto-mechanical properties of wood are negatively affected by moisture in its hygroscopic range, i.e. below cell wall saturation. The situation is completely different with the brittleness of wood (Brischke et al. 2014). Both below and above cell wall saturation (CWS), moisture reduces the brittleness of wood and increases its structural integrity. Therefore, this study aimed at examining the effect of wood MC on the structural integrity as well as its impact bending strength (IBS) both determined on wood specimens under dynamic loads.
