Bio-based, thermoplastic sheets for hot-pressing on plywood: an alternative to thermoset laminates

As part of the European project BASAJAUN (Building a Sustainable Joint between Rural and Urban Areas through Circular and Innovative Wood Construction Value Chains), our objective was to develop thermoplastic compounds based on biopolymers, wood particles and fire-retardants which can be processed by film extrusion and hot-pressed without adhesives onto plywood.
Such films should allow for easier material recycling compared to HPL. For example, plywood with thermoplastic films could be milled and re-used in particleboards or wood-polymer composites. This would contribute to a circular approach in the recycling of wood-based products. It was our objective to test different biopolymer-based compounds and films in terms of reaction-to-fire performance and to investigate the processability and surface adhesion on plywood. Benchmark was a commercial plywood with fireretarded HPL. As a further reference, we also included plywood impregnated with fire-retardant (without any laminate).
